Well, Ska, first to cut down your phone bill, you might try calling EchoMac thru one of the several in the Bay area, icluding the Berk. Mac Users Group BBS at 849-2684. The messages will get to the same places.

Mac 2 software, none that I know of yet that are strictly for the 2, but LOTS of software takes advantage of it's extra features. For example, the new release of Mac 3-D 2.1 now has color on screen, color or pattern shading, and a corrected screen updating. VideoWorks 2 also has lots of neat features (color, stereo sound, faster) on the 2. Etc.etc. Hmmmm... now that I think about it, there are many PD/shareware utilities, and toys for the 2. Kalidescope, Kolor, Klutz, color Icon Bounce, '020 cashe switch, etc. As far as I've heard, there is no 'compatability' software for the 2, but there really isn't a lot of software that has major problems. Many that have problems have already had updates (i.e. LightSpeed Pascal 1.11 and 'C' 2.11). What program are you having problems with? Also, try turning the '020 instruction cashe off. A/UX is Apple's version of UNIX, and will be able (much to my suprise) to run 'well behaved' Mac programs as well! The A/UX will be AT&T vers 5 compatable and also have lots of BSD extensions. It will also have access to the Mac Toolbox for programmers to put a Mac face on UNIX programs. Estimated that you must have 4 or 5 Megs of memory and at least 40 meg disk space for A/UX. Ask at BMUG, I'm sure that they have seen it.
..
I hope that the '030 rumor is for real, but since Motorola won't be delivering them until VERY late this year, it may be a few months for it to materialize. How about the Levco 'Transputer' multiprocessor board?
..
So, what's going on up in the Bay Area. What are you going to do on the Mac 2?

Whoa. Well, I know that some programs can use the old toolbox color routines, as does Cricket Draw... Tell me, why would turning off the instruction cache on the '020 change anything? I do ahve the util... got the BMUG "paris" disks... What am I planning to do? Excel, word... general stuff... I am waiting patiently for flight simulators!
BTW, the MactoberFest is this thursday... Bill Atkinson will be there. I'm gonna go check things out.
Dont worry about the phone bill; I am using PC Pursuit... I know I caould call the Q, but its always busy... Easier just to call LA.
"Ska", thats an old one. Some things just wont die. :-)
Anyhow, I meant to put forth to the world the question: "can one mix simms on the ][?" That is to say... this thing comes standard with 1 meg in 4 256K simms. If I wanted 2 megs, would I have to switch entirely to 1 meg simms? Or could I go to 5 megs (4 256K/4 1MB SIMMs)
Thanks.

For memory on the Mac 2, each bank of four SIMMs has to be the same, but you can mix between them...hmmmm, let's try a more detailed description. You can have 1 Meg (4 256k), 2 Meg (8 256k), 4 Meg (4 1Meg), 5 Meg (4 1 Meg, and 4 256k), and 8 Meg (8 1 Meg). Also, you will be able to plug in the 4 Meg SIMMs when they start shipping in a year or so. If you somehow need more memory now, the National Semiconductor memory expansion board holds up to 256 Meg. While I'm not sure why, the story I hear is that some software that doesn't run well with the '020 cashe on, will run well with the cashe off. But, I have never heard of specific titles that have cashe problems. I can't see why the cashe would affect software, unless the software was highly CPU timing dependant. There was some software that used the 'old' color scheme, but the newer software with the much greater color capabilities are much more beautiful and impressive. Right now the Amiga people are talking about 'desktop video', but the VideoWorks 2 demo that was selling at the Boston Expo on 7 or 8 disks absolutly blows anything that I've seen on the Amiga away. Takes up 6 Meg, and the sound file is one 2 Meg file, but it's sure to make someone who thinks IBM VGA is 'hot stuff' feel sick. Most of the stuff you mentioned that you were going to use should work, provided you are using the latest updates. Excel 1.04, Word 3.01, etc.

Hmmm...I'm not trying to quell anything! What I was hoping someone would do would be to finish the work that Leo Laporte had done! He used the ARC format to come up with pretty much the same user interface that Stuffit uses. THAT'S my point.

Red Ryder 10.2 terminal program for the Apple Macintosh hows 57,600 baud on the menu and HAS BEEN 8mhz FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW. The Mac II currently runs at 16mhz.
If that is meant to imply that the Mac (and especially RR!) can actually use high speeds (even at 4800 baud), then you're off base. The 68000 Macs can barely handle 4800 baud file transfers, and there is a lot of variation in the terminal programs (RR is among the worst). The Mac II is better, of course. I don't think that most Macs can really push the Telebit to the limit.

Subject: Baseball Stats On Disk
I have compiled the baseball stats for both the National and American league batters and pitchers. The categories include the usual At Bats, Home Runs ERA, hits, base on balls etc. but I have also included the position, bats left or right, batting avg. vs left or right handed pitching, in all about 25 separate items for over 500 batters and over 400 pitchers!! The formats are many-- HYPERCARD, EXCEL,OVERVUE,FILEMAKER PLUS, and even in DBF format for theIBM and DB III or DBXL . I have both 86 and 87 seasons. With your individual data-base you can sort, group by team, rank by batting avg or rbi's etc. etc. the possibilities are endless. The cost $20.00 for 87,$15.00 for 86, or $30.00 for both years. For more info call (408) 842 0190 or drop e mail to me at compuserve 71410,2636. Or on Genie to Roger Cornia.

Regarding MultiFinder, the release version of the new system (4.2) and finder (6.0) was released several days ago. The 4-disk set contains a new version of almost everything (except the IW driver), including a new version of the Apple File Exchange (now version 1.0.1) which was released at the end of August in 1.0 form. There have been a number of minor changes since the beta-test version. One of the best new additions is that the icon which appears at the right side of the menubar during multifinder operation can be clicked for quick switching between applications. The 512KE has definitely been discontinued.
